Canada’s Resource Cities Speakers Bureau

It is our pleasure to announce the creation of the Canada’s Resource Cities Speakers Bureau which will allow local chambers of commerce to secure knowledgeable and engaging speakers with valuable experience working in Canada’s various natural resource sectors.

We encourage local chambers of commerce to use this resource to secure speakers for their events.

Please note that we will be adding speakers to our bureau on a continuous basis so be sure to check back often. Moreover, if you are looking for a speaker with expertise in an area that is not currently represented within our Speaker’s Bureau, please do not hesitate to contact Eric Charron as he can provide assistance in securing a speaker.

Speaking Tour Featuring the Hon. Jean Charest

From March 4 to 11, The Honorable Jean Charest, former Premier of Quebec and current Chair of the Partnership for Resource Trade, addressed chambers of commerce in Winnipeg, Timmins, Montreal, Moncton and Halifax. Mr. Charest spoke about how we’ve entered an era of change in the global demand for energy and other natural resources and how Canada plays an important role as a responsible provider of natural resources to the global economy. He also discussed how these global and national trends impact Canada’s “resource cities.”

Natural resources are the foundation of the Canadian economy. However, Canadians living in urban areas do not always see the linkages between their prosperity and resource developments located hundreds of miles away. The Canadian Chamber has organized tours for executives of chambers of commerce to learn more about the resource sectors and to build business connections across the country and generate awareness of the benefits of natural resources in parts of Canada that would not normally hear of these sectors.

Gateway to Asia Tour
From September 28 to October 1, the Canadian Chamber organized a tour to the west coast of B.C. to learn about the opportunities and challenges facing the local energy, mining, forestry and fishing industries. This tour gave chamber executives the opportunity to become informed about key issues facing Canada’s export infrastructure off the West Coast, which is essential to the economic prosperity to the entire country. As the gateway to the rapidly growing economies of Asia, B.C.’s export infrastructure will play a key role in Canada’s ability to diversify our export markets and create economic ties to the region that will drive future economic growth.

#GatewayToAsiaTour Twitter Campaign
While on the tour, chamber executives were encouraged to take photographs and share their experiences through Twitter using the hashtag #GatewayToAsiaTour. View the highlights from the Twitter campaign.

Energy Tour
The oil and gas industry is currently at the heart of the national debate of several key policy issues: environmental protection, adding value to our resources, interregional distributions of wealth and economic development among others. The sector also faces many of the same challenges and obstacles as other natural resource-producing regions, meaning that the approaches and solutions applied in this sector could offer insight for other areas of the country engaged in mining, forestry or other types of resource production. From March 17 to 19, the Canadian Chamber organized a tour to Calgary and Fort McMurray for chamber of commerce reps to see firsthand what the oil sector is all about and to gain a better understanding of the forces, individuals and technologies shaping the oil and gas sector.
